PPP2 Review: Assassins Creed 3

One game that I really wanted to play since it came out was Assassins Creed 3 due to the overall hype and good reviews it was receiving so I bought the complete edition off Steam. The game follows the character Desmond as he used technology to go into the head of a person from the 18th century who is a descendant of. We begin by playing as Haytham who is trying to gather followers and we use him to be able to disrupt the day to day activities in several American cities including Boston and New York. It is wonderful to see what these cities used to look like as we can only see them as they are today. We then take on the roll of Connor, another descendant and a Native American who develops into on of the best assassins in the country.

Putting the story aside the general game play is fantastic and has a brilliant free running system that makes you perform any leap and jump to help fly faster around the cities. This is probably the best part of this game as it provides so much freedom to be able to jump to heights you didn't think were possible. This aspect is also combined with the missions (or sequences) in the game which are joined by side missions as well. The missions are fun but can sometimes be very challenging as stealth is a huge part to this game and remaining undetected is more difficult and frustrating than it looks in some missions.

Over the course of the game there are a lot of combat scenes which are just as difficult to get right but result in much triumph when you do finally get it right. Although the combat is something that could be improved, as at times there are swarms of enemies around and you want to hack and slash but its useless to try, along with the times when you think you've hit the counter button when in fact you haven't and get head butted right when your about to win.

Along with good game play the game has a soft soundtrack which gently take you through the bustling city streets and the quiet forest tracks only to change dramatically as an elk makes a run for you; which reminded me a lot of the tension in the Tomb Raider franchise. The sounds are also good and set the mood well of each location that you are in, for instance the forest where the natives live are eerily quiet and excellent for sneaking through the tree tops to catch game.

The graphics in this game are something to be envied as they are beautiful. Each different environment has been perfectly crafted and contains beautiful amounts of detail to show what 18th century American would have been like, as a lot of the game has been researched in full detail so that it can be as accurate as possible. This is also combined with the most accurate costumes possible to create the illusion that you are in those times. Again I have a concern with this too as the costumes are fantastic apart from Connor's costume when he become a true assassin. For me if just didn't look like he from that particular era and it's not that it spoiled the whole game but it did bug me as they got all of the over costumes so perfectly right.
