VFX Testing: Smoke

For my project I need to create smoke for when my time machine appears in the jungle so I followed a simple guide on YouTube which I can use to create generate smoke that just goes straight up but for a test this worked perfectly. For my actual project I will be making the smoke come outwards from the machine but just for testing I didn't alter the way it looked as I had other tests that needed doing.

I first started by creating a new composition, and then added in a new solid, which can be any colour, I chose black for now. Then we added in a particle playground and started to change the settings around on it so that we could create smoke that would go upwards, at a good speed and was also white and not red.

We then added a fast blur onto the particles and made the bluriness 90 so that it looked thinner and more like smoke. We then duplicated the layer twice so that it looked thicker and more smokey before messing around with the settings on each one individually.

I then changed the fast blur down slightly to 49 so that it wasn't as harsh and added a sharpen onto it as it was very blurry. This wasn't the best of tutorials but it was the only one that I could find that didn't have extra packages that were required to make it. Again as I stated at the beginning, it is fine for just a test as I now know what I need to do in the future to create smoke even if the video below isn't amazing.
