By Stuart and Callum Brown
Stuart did the Spider, Possum (Sugar glider,) and Duck Billed Platypus
characters, and Callum did the Raccoon and Snake character. During our
recent trip to London Super Comic-con, we handed out our work to various
artists for criticism, for which we received very good feedback. Some
constructive feedback from artist Steve Scott was to think more about
lighting and texture further. Taking this on board, the most recent
illustration (the snake) contains different thickness in the line work,
crosshatching to imitate jeans and rough clothing, such as cotton,
smoother lines for more leather like material such as the coat, and a
more bumpy texture on his scaly skin. We also thought about this in
brush tools, instead of just using the airbrush tool, we explored
different brush tools for textures, this is also evident in the final
concept art for the environment. This I feel has worked wonderfully, and
now we have been told this it seems obvious that we should have done it
in our previous illustrations, but that is the bonus of getting
feedback from professionals, you can constantly and quickly improve your
art. We will use this in all of our future comic styled work.
