Techniques in the Industry: Monster's University

By Meg Sugden
When looking at the techniques that are used to create video game cut scenes I found an article that I really enjoyed about the creation of Monsters University as they used the same kind of technique to be able to produce the sequel. It was so fascinating to read and very enjoyable as it shows how the industry would handle something as big as a feature film and also how long it would take to render, which was a couple of years! And that was using super computers. The brilliant thing about this article is the length of time that it takes to render out something this big which would take 29 hours to render out just one frame of footage; that's incredible!

The entire article shows you the amount of effort taken to produce something this big and also the amount of detail that goes into each character, especially Sully having 5.5 million individual hairs attached to his body, almost triple the original. Obvious this is just a comparison to that it would be like for the industry to make and this is for an animation and not a game where the scene would have to be lower poly, but nowadays with the advancing technology it is possible to create something with that much detail and still be able to run it at 30 or 60 fps.
