Context of Practice Game Research: The Unfinished Swan
Although I already looked at this game last year, it is definitely one hat has been most influencial for this project. This is a beautiful game set in a completely white world at first and you are given the ability to paint it with black splatters to reveal parts of it and discover a path through it all. This is a really lovely mechanic and it works so well in this minimalist game. What I really like about the mechanic is I would hope that it is something that could be incorporated into a game environment, to me it looks like it could be something that could be recreated after doing some research into the mechanics.
What I really like about this game is the art style, it is so simplistic, especially in the beginning, but works so well as the stylised nature of it makes it all. The overall design incorporates mostly grey scale colours throughout and then as the levels progress we start to see more colours being incorporated and more elements that you can manipulate. To begin with you appear to be using black paint but then as you advance you get different colours, and what looks like water on one level. I really think this game is beautiful in it's own way, especially in the first couple of levels where it includes the paint levels as you have to use this mechanic to get around the level.
This could definitely be something that I could incorporate into my own game level, even if the paint splatters where already there. It seems like a really nice way of going round a game level and I believe that an effect like this could also be produced with just lighting or colour instead, and not have a mechanic at all. This is something that I will definitely look into researching so that I can look at it in more detail.
