Context of Practice 3: Slight Change of Direction and Revised Essay Proposal

Throughout the course of this project I have always been a little unsure of the direction that I wanted to head in but in the back of my mind I have always wanted to include the influence of real world environments, which so far has been a theme in this project. I then looked at puzzles and incorporating them into my work and settled on looking at how I can incorporate different perspectives and view points to distort worlds, but found that this really wasn't interesting me. So therefore I have decided to slightly change the angle of what I want to look at. I felt that this change was necessary and not a last minute decision as previous research has already been carried out.

So now, I have decided to slightly change my idea to look more into real world environments and how they can be adapted and lit correctly for video games. This is something that I am much more interested in as I have done a lot of research already into how environments can be lit for video games and have looked into the different ways they can be lit and also what games are based off real world enviornments and whether they work well or not. I definitely feel that this is a better direction to head in and for my dissertation as well as much of the research has already been carried out, only further bits and pieces needs to be done.

I therefore want to narrow down my ideas to look at the things below and how they would be created and used in a video game instead of the real world. Its a really nice topic to look at and there sometimes aren't that many considerations into not only the lighting but the colour schemes used in a game to produce different emotions and make the game more of an experience instead of just an environment.
- real-world environment influence
- fog, distances
- particle simulations, snow and rain
- Colour and how they can be used
- northern lights
- Weather as character and what it can bring to the environment

Essay Proposal
1. What was your subject research at Level 4?
The question that I chose to look at, at Level 4, was 'With reference to specific examples, to what extent can it be argued that, with ever improving technologies, visual style is more important than narrative substance in contemporary film making?'

2. What was your subject research at Level 5?
The question that I chose to look at, at Level 5, was 'The Comparison of the Impact of Environmental Storytelling in Games Through the Different Use of Features Between Indie and Triple A Titles' which I found a lot more interesting and engaging.

3. What research needs to be undertaken into the general and specific contexts of your practice?
Throughout this project I aim to research into real world environments and how they can be brought into video games concentrating on adapting them for a particular purpose or genre and then lighting them correctly taking into consideration all different types of lighting and their functionality. In addition to this I will also be thinking about how colour psychology and colour theory can be used effectively in a game environment in order to bring different moods and emotions to a player when walking around.

In terms of research I will be looking at a number of different game environments that are already in the market in order to be able to critically analyse them and see what they are doing right in terms of bringing a real world environment into a gaming one and also looking at different lighting techniques and processes before looking into colour techniques and theory as well.

4. What approaches will you take and what processes, methods, materials and tools are to be involved in research into your practice?
I will begin by looking at the existing games on the market and critically analysing them for myself, which will lead to learning others critiques and opinions on them as well. This will then lead to studying books, journals and other materials to gain knowledge on lighting and colour theory along with anything else I feel necessary, at this stage a literacy search will be complied which will contain main quotes that have been gathered and will help fuel by final essay.

5. What preparation or investigation do you need to undertake for your creative practice to take place?
For my creative practice I want to be able to use a real world location to show that anywhere can produce a game environment that is based around a real world location. Therefore research that will need to be carried out will be history of that location as other periods of time could be taken into considerations, and whether or not the buildings would still look the same as they do today. Other investigations would again be looking at existing games already to see what they do regarding influence from different time periods and this will then be noted in my design work that I will produce.

Other preparations will include also watching films and animations to see that same influence within them as well to ensure that I have all of the necessary research in place to be able to start creating my own world with a real world location in mind. This will then lead to the decision of the location and whether or not it will be local or not.

6. What research do you need to undertake regarding who your creativity is for?
The necessary research that I will conduct here will be into target audiences and for this I will research the different markets and then a number of games existing in each one before making the conclusion regarding where I think it will be best fit. I will look at existing games to see where the main target audience for them is and then base the final decision from my findings.

7. Perceived problems or difficulties?
The only difficulties that I need to worry about are picking a location and whether or not it will be local or not. If it is local primary sources can be gathered, if it is not local I will need to see if there are enough secondary sources to work from.

8. Primary sources of information?
- London EGX 2014: I went to this gaming fair in September this year and I will use the information about games that I gained from their to help influence my work, along with the feedback I got from showing off my work.
- Interview: Hopefully arrange an interview with several people in the games industry to be able to gain knowledge about my chosen subject and again, gain opinions on it.
- Questionnaire: Hopefully send out a number of questionnaires, either via survey monkey or by hand to get a large about of samples back to be able to see different opinions on the subjects.
- Insomnia 2014: I will be attending the Insomnia event in November where I can gather a lot of useful information about new games and also take part in the meet and great sessions, and the developer talks and panels.
