Environment Research: Harry Potter Game Series

Unlike the other games in the series that weren't actually that impressive in terms of environment design; Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) really excelled the series in the end due to the impressive graphics and also the wonderful 3D open world environment of which you can full explore in a detailed replica of the Hogwarts Castle itself.

When looking back at the first two games that they brought out; Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) it s clear that they didn't spend a great deal of time in adding in detail to the castle and probably didn't design the whole castle due to the load screens between doors and the rooms on the inside being bigger than first appearance; also the fact that you could go through a door on the second floor in the first game and end up doing Quidditch practise on the other side... Although there was this problem and the graphics were very cartoony the environment was still a pleasure to move around as at the time it did resemble the school well.

During the gameplay of the next two games the graphics did improve but the gameplay was not as good as it was in the first two; even though the characters started to take shape more and included a lot more detail in each of the levels. Where these two games, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) there is detail to the individual levels but it is not as much of an open world experience which was quite disappointing as this is the point in the film in which the castle changed slightly and got better.

Skipping over the 5th game for now, the 6th one, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (2009) was actually very good in terms of being able to explore but due to the almost exact same graphics as the 5th game this game does not improve in any way. If anything it is actually made worse due to the potions classes as picking up bottles and viles is very different on a console making sure the exact measurements are added is very tricky - making this game frustrating in places.

When looking at the last two games, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (2010) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II (2011), these are the two games that in my opinion are not worth buying. The graphics are excellent in this game and have been improved greatly but when it comes to the gameplay this game is a real flop. The original games are much more happy to play and the look they tried to go for in these two were much darker to match the films but by making them like this, and also making them combact based and almost a third person shooter game but with magic just doesn't work.

Now going back to the 5th one, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix; this game was the ebst one in my opinion. Combined with semi decent realistic graphics this game is an excellent example of a smaller open world experience. Although there are set places you have to go to progress through the game successfully but if you so wished you can simply wander around the environment, as it is truly stunning and a fantasic replica of an actual castle; making it even more exciting to exxplore at discover all the rooms in Hogwarts.
