PPP2 Review: Fez

Fez is another fantastic 2D platformer that I came across a while ago. This is a wonderful little game that follows Gomez, a small white blobby thing that acquires a fez from his village leader. This gives him the ability to rotate the world and realise that it isn't actually one flat 2D world but in fact it is 4 separate 2D sides which introduce cubes into the world.

Gomez's job is to go from level to level and collect either small pieces of cubes or whole cubes themselves. Once Gomez has then collected enough cubes he can use them to activate doors to more world in order to, you guessed it, collect more cubes. Even though the basics of the game do not seem that exciting, this is a fantastic game that is actually very challenging. The puzzles in this game are difficult and require you to remember a lot about your surrounding as some levels can only be assessed by lowering the water level but you have to travel through about 10 levels to get there and then you have to find your way back to the level you were on previous again - which can get very confusing. To help you along the way the map can be very useful as it shows you the objects that can be picked up on the different levels which is very helpful along with the fact that when you have collected everything on that level the outline of it on map will change from grey to gold, again very helpful as you know where to explore next.

The platforming is very smooth and very easy to get the hang of. Also if you do miss aim and fall too far and die the re spawn time is super quick meaning that you can try again almost instantly so it does not distract from the gameplay. This is a very pretty game despite it being a 16 bit 2D game. All of the locations are beautifully designed and exploring each one is a pleasure as there are hidden rooms on some of the different sides of the cubes to be found and there are also treasure chests, keys and other things to be found in order to complete the game 100%, which is something that I feel I have to do.

Something though which does bug me about this game though is the fact that traveling around the map is very difficult especially if you are trying to get to a certain place. It is difficult to remember how to get back there, especially if you put the game down and come back to it later. That aside it us still a brilliant game that i would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys a challenging 2D platformer but you are definitely best off playing it all in one go due to forgetting where the places are if you don't.
