Game Art and Machinima: Unreal Engine

By Meg Sugden
What I then wanted to look at was the Unreal Engine as I believe that this, along with Crytek's Cry Engine, is one of the best game engines that exist at the moment. The Unreal Engine is developed by Epic Game and was first introduced in 1998 as again, like Valve's engine Source, a first person shooter game. Although again made for first person shooters it has been used in many different genres of game like stealth, MMORPG's amd other RPG's and the current engine that they are using it Unreal Engine 4.

After debuting in 1998 the first generation Unreal Engine featured integrated rendering, collision detection, AI, visibility, networking, scripting and file system management into one engine, making it very impressive for its time. Unreal Engine 1 provided a lot of advanced software and had a very simple to understand scripting language, which made it easy to mod and this pleased the audience as they were able to get involved with the development of levels and different attributes.

The engine continued to grow and improve more and more until they eventually got to Unreal Engine 4, one of the most powerful engines in the world currently. In August 2005 it was announced that the Unreal Engine 4 had been in development since 2003 and in June 2012 the release of the engine was here. So now the new engine is here and is running smoothly and creates a fantastic gaming environment for gamers to explore and have fun in and the possibilities for this engine are incredible as they are almost ahead of their time and run on many different platforms, along with showing off even more potential on the new XBox1 and PS4 consoles along with many different types of PC's.
