Reflective Acoount of Responsive Project

During our Responsive project we aimed to produce a film that was based around the effects of self harming on one of the individuals in our team. As it was a difficult subject that we were approaching we knew it was going to be hard to make such an intense film and also difficult to portray that right kind of emotion and actually produce a very serious film. We found that we worked very well as a team, providing encouragement to everybody involved and ensuring that everyone was happy whilst we were in the filming process. Even from the beginning of the project we worked well, looking at a number of different films to gain inpsiration and quickly deciding which ones were our favourites as a group. From our research we discovered that we were definitely more drawn to Steve McQueen’s films as they are so perfectly crafted and we all loved the way he used long, lingering shots that sometimes feel like they go on forever but it is effective as it shows you just how long they would have felt if you were the person in that situation. It’s a really nice effect that he creates and we tried to get this into our own film.

Especially in the longer film we made we felt it necessary to use these longer type of shots to be able to convey the correct emotion and signal to the audience that this lasted for a long time, as we obviously couldn't make our film last 2 years.

Altogether I am so happy with the way that this project has turned out. We have received such brilliant feedback from both final films that we made, especially the long 12 minute one, and from not only the people that were there for Callum around that time but also strangers who have watched it and gone through the same thing. It’s the best reward from this project to see the feedback that we have gotten and how it has touched so many people and really influenced others, and if we were to do this project again there wouldn’t be one single that I would wanted to change about it.
