COP3 Research: First or Third Person?

Context of Practice 3 Research: First or Third Person
This is often a tricky decision when making a video game and for me it was, especially with the type of game I was going to be creating. I had to think for a long time about which one to choose, but it felt right to go with first person in the end. For me I would love to try out a third person game process but due to limited time I had to think about which one would be more feasible in the short time that I had to complete this project and also which one would look better in the end. As I am competent at creating environments I choose not to create my own character to go in as I knew it wouldn’t be up to the same standard and as I trying out a different art style for this game I didn’t want a shoddy looking character to ruin it. I would have liked to use the character to show the emotions and the feelings that would be associated in the scene and even incorporate some voice acting into it, but I feel that it wouldn’t do it justice and would make the environment feel worse.

What I aim to achieve instead is a complete character backstory so that you can read up about the character and interact with it in that way instead of trying to show emotions through it. Instead I am going to use the environment to show these emotions and use the colour and lighting around the character to create a sense of mood and atmosphere and let the player become closer with the environment in that way and make their own decisions about how they should feel without bad animating getting in the way.

I also believe that you can become more immersed with a first person game as well. Although you are still playing as a character that has a complete backstory to them and are put into that situation for a reason, you can’t help but feel more connected with everything around you. It’s not the character doing it, it’s you and it makes you more involved in the game and you are able to look at the game through your eyes instead of looking past the shoulder of a character.

(Example GTA V: First vs Third person)
