Extended Practice Game Play and Collectibles Research: Kao the Kangaroo Round 2
The next game that I wanted to look into was Kao the Kangaroo as this is a great looking game all over. It is bright and colourful and remind me a lot of how Spyro plays through. The mechanics of the game are very nice as well and respond exceptionally. The game features the obvious mechanics of being able to control Kao's basic movement and this responds well to the direction in which you tell the character to move. There are then a number of different mechanics to this game making it so diverse to play through. There are lot of different things to do in the game, and jumping is just the start of it, and Kao has at least three different jumps that he can pull off pretty much one after the other. Beginning the his regular jump, that does actually allow him to travel up fairly high in the level, reaching higher platforms and with the help of the second jump, he go higher and reach up to do a double jump. Where the third jump is used is more of an action as when activated Kao will perform a spin the air, making his go a little higher but also travel further across the ground, making this effectively a triple jump action.
That aside there are then many of mechanics that can be seen alongside this, like in the first couple of levels you can use nuts that have fallen onto the ground to hit things far away. This can allow platforms to drop down and also allows bridges to be made. Kao can also use his ears to grab onto ropes that are above him and traverse across the environment, creating a weird and unique twist to the traditional rope swinging mechanic. He then lastly has a stomp like move that he can use to be able to shake the ground around him and also to kill enemies which is very effective as they do not necessarily have to be next to the character then.
Lastly I wanted to look at the collectibles in the game as I do like the way in which they are laid out. Throughout the levels there are coins to collect which add to a total and then there is also crystal shards to collect as well, making the game have some different possibilities for exploring as if your someone who likes to collect everything then you will ensure that you get every last one, something that works well for the game.
