Different Software Choices

When it comes to making a game there are a number of different software choices that we could have chosen from to complete this project brief and below I have compared and contrasted each one to be able to find the best one to use in this particular instance that are used in both the gaming industry and in education.

Unreal Engine:
This is a game engine developed by Epic Games, and has been widely used in the gaming industry to create primarily first person shooters, MMORPG's and other RPG's. At the moment the company are developing Unreal Engine 4 and it is said to be better than ever to the gaming industry. The reasons as to why this would be a good game engine to use is the fact that it is widely used in the gaming industry, the are many tutorials across the internet to offer help, it has good shader and material editors and also has FBX support.

Unity:
Unity is probably one of the best choices that I have to work with, it is a powerful system that allows high quality rendering, that can be put together quickly and simply using the tools provided. The development that they are on at the moment is Unity version 4.1.2 which is one of the best out there at the moment due to how beautiful the scenes are once they are complete and the unity game engine allows the user to create different platforms and also many different types of games from 3D first and third person shooters to a 2D platformer.

 CryENGINE:
CryENGINE is another brilliant piece of game development software, created by the company Crytek, and is most well known for the creation of the Crysis and Fry Cry series. It is known for making beautiful environments for any type of platformer and is currently on its 3rd version entitled CryENGINE 3. The CryENGINE also has the ability to create games on multiple platforms and is also free to use as long as it is for non commercial use.
After looking at the options above, as these were the ones that were available to me, I decided to go with Unity in the end as this software was already on our computers and in the end looking at what capabilities it has it seemed like the best option for this particular project.
