Context of Practice AAA Research: Heavy Rain

The next game that I wanted to look at was Heavy Rain, which is an interactive drama, action-adventure video game that was released in 2010. The game is set in the film noir genre, which makes it work very well as we play as four different character who are individually involved with the Origami Killer in some wall. What makes this game so unique is that there are multiple endings whether you have managed to keep your character alive our not, something that is very unique as the main characters can be killed if you do not decide to do the right thing. Another interesting aspect is that it narrative and gameplay can be altered just by how you play. The players decisions and actions during the game can lead again to the different endings and also how other characters interact with you later on in the game.

The actual gameplay is not the most exciting of games as it is fairly slow paced but there is always a lot to do in every environment that you go in. As Heavy rain is an adventure game, along with other things, you still have the ability to wonder around environments and interact with everything in them. This is a wonderful feature of the game, as you have the ability to interact with so many objects, if you want to get something to eat you can, if you want to watch telly you can or if you just want to have a conversation with another character you can, it is the beauty of the game. Throughout most scenes as well the player can hold down a button to see what thoughts are going through the characters mind and this can trigger an internal monologue, giving us that closer feeling with the characters and allowing us to connect with them further as we know what there thinking in each situation they are put it.

The overall story that is played in the game is fascinating and you never really know where its going to go as there are so many possibilities for different endings, eight altogether to find and see, but this means that even if you were to play it one way the first time there is possibilities to change what you did a second. This is a wonderful idea to put into a game as it means that the player is never bored and because there is so much to do and find in each environment that you go to, there is endless fun in exploring and finding hidden information in the game as you travel through.

The main reason that this game is so perfect for looking it is obviously due to the incredible storyline that follows the 4 main characters. It is a beautiful piece of writing that works so well for that mixed genre of gameplay. Even though the gameplay is so, it isn't predictable in any way and is always flipping upside-down to reveal different people are involved in certain ways and it's just so cleverly written. The other quick obvious reason is the interactivity in the environment and how much you can actually get involved with, especially when you are at the characters home. It is just a brilliant game and will definitely help when thinking about how to start my practical.
