FMX 2014: COLLIDER Transmedia Case-Study

FMX Wednesday 23rd 2014
COLLIDER Transmedia Case-Study ny Nuno Bernado (beActive)
The first talk of Wednesday was all about looking at transmedia and how this can be applied to an original story, whether it be a a story, book or game to begin with. Nuno Bernado from beActive went through with us about everything that they create and the process behind how they do it specifically. The company as a whole makes an enormous amount of content ranging through books,  novels, comics, eBooks, blogs, social media profiles, TV series, mobile games, apps and even feature films.

What they is first create a universe and then begin their own transmedia journey where they will feed parts of that story into different mediums. They create a fan-base first in which they can get feedback from their existing audience so that when they want to bring out their new content they already have a solid base of people that will be willing to look at their work as soon as they can to get that next installment.

Collider's journey started in 2008 as a short story with a cast of 6 characters that wake up in the future. The film idea is described as a Terminator meets Lost kind of experience where a group of people are thrown together and expected to survive.  The running moral them throughout is that, what would you do if you had a second chance at life?

Developing Story
- Defining characters
- Researched the Hydron collider
- Built a story around it
- Time and space was defined
- Applications were submitted
What the company wanted to do was include a large amount of back stories for character and show were each of the character came from, which spanned from 2012-2017 as they all arrived in 2018 without any knowledge of why their here or how they got there.

As a company they kept the audience the same all the way through so that they kept them happy and this way they know how to please them. They also partnered up with different companies to build up their brand further and create a larger distribution area. There project was great though as they usually try to give 2/3 away for free. This invites more people to join as the consumers then do not have to pay a lot of money to be involved with the company. On top of this, they also had something called the Collider movement where they ask there fans to share their content in return for points on a website. Then in return for their extra efforts that they put it the top 200 people in each country that its published in get their name put into the credits. The company want to make a big effort to be all about giving back to their fans and this is their way of saying thank you for sticking with us throughout.

What's Next?
- The feature length film will be released in Portugal, UK and Ireland
- The Machinima series and video game is in production for 2014
- They are also going to be producing a sequel web series

Overall this was an interesting talk, but certainly not the most exciting. Although saying that we found out a lot of information  about the process of transmedia how an interesting way ti begin a transmedia story is to start off as a novel, then move it too a web series, then take it to social media, then  graphic novels or comic books, games, TV and finally turn it into a feature film. I also learnt that its always important to think about transmedia when developing a story as it can provide you with a wide variety of different stories and paths to follow and allows you to develop your story in many different ways.
