Environment Research: Dear Esther

Recently a game entitled Dear Esther (2012) was released and this is a truly beautiful game and probably one of the best examples to look at while creating my own game environment due to how beautiful this game actually is.

Dear Esther is a first person game developed by thechineseroom and is unlike any other video game as it is very art based and all about the narrative story. It does not include any combat and does not require any choices to be made or tasks to be complete. The player moves through the different locations on the island and the narrator depicts the story as the character goes, making this game not very exciting but the graphics are amazing to look at and all of the settings are based upon the Hebrides Islands.

Whilst playing this game the gamer can really immerse themselves in the game environment and discover just how beautiful it actually is. The graphics are amazing and are stunning to walk around. In terms of other games this one is almost photo realistic and it almost looks and feels like your walking around a real place - not one that has been digitally created. It is amazing to walk around this island to see what beauty it has on it, and along with the narration of Nigel Carrington gamers can find secrets and learn about the island in greater detail.

This is probably the only game that I have seen like this that is this beautiful but isn't about combat or fighting and is simply about relaxing and letting the wonders of the island and the smoothing voice of Carrington take you away from the stress of life and take you somewhere visually stunning.
