Fear Research: Penumbra (Black Plague)
The last game which I want to look at in relation to fear in game is Penumbra: Black Plague as this was the best one in the series and had the most tension and fear involved in the gameplay. It is an exploration survival horror game, in a first person perspective. The game is very similar to that of Amnesia, in the way that the character does not have weapons and will use stealth to be able to overcome physical puzzles in the game and also avoid any monsters that are in the level as well. Again, similar to Amnesia, in Black Plague there are a lot of puzzles that involved opening doors and interacting with objects in the level to be able to progress.
Then, similarly to Slender: Eight Pages, the character moves around the level holding a torch which lights the way in dark areas. The general gameplay is very good, and there is always places to explore and find, whilst trying to overcome the infection that has taken over the character. Again, like other horror games the sounds are all very disturbing and are used well in the game to create that spooky atmosphere that brings a sense of fear to the gameplay.
In terms of graphics, this is the kind of detail that I want to go to in my own level. I want to used textures well, like they have here and even though I will not be including the same objects, as most of these are very technological, I want to be able to incorporate the same amount of detail into my own work as it is important to me to create my environment to a high standard.
