Responsive Planning: Method Statements and Risk Assessments

By Stuart Brown
Day 1+2 of Shoot + Method Statement. 5pm – 1am March 4th – 10am – 11am March 5th

The first shoot consisted of scenes 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 10, and 11. We decided to film these particular scene first as they all involved going to Hebden Bridge (where the story actually happened). So while we could be in the actual locations, such as my parents house, Hebden Bridge streets, Burnley Road, Mytholmroyd train station, ect.. the film would gain an extra sense of realism, especially for those making it. Many of the actors and extras were also the actual people who were in the story (except for the thug that attacks our main character for obvious reasons) so that again the film feels more real and accurate to events. Creating a Method Statement allowed for accurate time management during the shoot and a check off list of equipment and props we needed. It also allowed other people such as extras, actors, and hosts to understand our process definitively. The risk assessment simply allowed our cast and crew to remain safe while shooting. Here is the Method Statement and Risk assessment for filming Tuesday March 4th - Wednesday March 5th.

Method Statement

Video Filming
Train – Burnley Road – Hebden Bridge park – 7 Hullett Close – Hebden Bridge street  - Location
5pm – 1am Tuesday March 4th – 10am – 11am - Wednesday March 5th
Involves Scenes 1,2,3,4,7, 10 & 11.

This shoot will firstly involve Scene 3: the Train Scene (the character looking out of a train window and gets a paper cut looking through his Journal). Then, when we get off the station at Mytholmroyd, we film Scene 11: train platform  scene (where the character looks at the tracks). We will then travel to Burnley road to film Scene 2: Street Scene (where the character is simply walking toward Hebden and when heading the opposite way towards Mytholmroyd falls down. He then meets friends who offer him a cigarette in Hebden Bridge). The next scene is Scene 4: the park scene (where the character shares a ‘weed kiss’ where he blows smoke into a females mouth). After this, we travel to a secluded street in Hebden Bridge where we film Scene 10: the punch scene (where the character is unprovokingly attacked).  If there is time, we will then shoot Scene 11 again at a different train stop in the dark, to give us two options to use in editing. The team will then travel to 7 Hullett Close to film the last scene of the night: Scene 7: the bathroom scene, (where the character self harms). The following morning we will film Scene 1: the opening (where the man looks at his scars and reflection) and the final scene where his girlfriend comforts him, seeing he is upset.

All members of the team will be pre-briefed on conduct and safety procedures before each shoot and will adhere to the relative host’s requirements under Health and Safety.

Due to the nature of the drama being shot and our planning, the actors will wear planned but normal clothed costumes but no safety equipment will be required. Extras will also be present for the Park scene.

Due to the story, smoking materials will be permitted on site for the scenes which require it in storyboards (all for which are exterior) but an ash tray and bin will be on site so they’re will be no littering. Smoking will not be permitted inside.
