For next year, I wanted to have in my mind a number of different conferences and events that I could go to for next year/end of this year. As I am going to be conducting the research for my dissertation over the summer it provides a really nice opportunity to gather more research and primary sources.
Game City (Nottingham)
The first one is Game City in Nottingham which is an annual festival that takes place in Nottingham and invites gamers to come together and engage in experiences in new ways. They like as many people as possible to be able to 'join in, play, learn and have some fun in the process.'
The festival runs from the 19th to the 26th October and promises to be spectacular with many people attending and lots of interesting talks to listen to over the course of the week and a bit. But what really interests me about this festival is that they have opportunity for work experience there and you can volunteer and help out, which would be an incredible thing to put on my CV. Unfortunately there isn't any information about volunteering yet as their site is down at the moment, but this definitely something I hope to get involved with.
Game Horizon (Gatehead)
Unfortunately I actually missed this this year as it was from the 7-8th May this year, but again this is something that I could consider going to next year, if I don't decided to go to FMX as this would then conflict with it. Again like most festivals they have a huge line up of guest speakers, examples from this year were people from Sega and TT Games, and they promise to deliver quality information about the game industry and give you information about there practise and how they could also help you get further in the industry yourself. This again would be a brilliant festival to attend as looking at the schedule for this year that has just past they pack so much into 2 days! It would be very interesting to go to and experience.
Platform Expos (Hull)
The next festival that I wanted to look at was Platform Expos which is featured in Hull in November this year on the 14th and 15th. Once again this looks very interesting and I hope that I can attend, obviously depending on how much the tickets are and if I get the time off work. But it seems like it would be a really exciting festival and just the advert for the ticket queue being like a zombie horde just makes me want to go even more. Looking at last years line up of speakers there were definitely some interesting talks that looked like they would be suitable to go to and there was also a lot to do there as well so was opportunities to show off my work at the same time. This is definitely something that I will look at closer to the time when they announce speakers and also ticket prices.
BAF Game (Bradford)
Then there is the obvious BAF Game choice, which I know that I will be attending as this is something that we can get with college and go to for a good price so regardless of who the speakers are there is always going to be something interesting to see in these talks and then there is also the opportunity to talk to them after, get advice on my work and also show it off with a proper show reel. BAF Game runs from the 17th to the 22nd and is a festival already in my calender.
Develop (Brighton)
This is a festival that is actually coming up pretty soon on the 8th to 10th July 2014 and would be perfect to help me to write my dissertation, unfortunately it is also rather expensive and can go up to £600 for all of the days, which is just money I don't have. The talks that feature here are all fantastic and very technology heavy which would have been perfect for research into my dissertation but unfortunately it is probably not going to happen, I guess I'll just have to read the magazine instead.
Games Britannia (Sheffield)
This is a very interesting looking games festival set in Sheffield to celebrate its gaming history and where it is going in the future. What really appeals to me about this festival is that it is free for everyone and you only have to pre-book tickets as the event gets busy, even though the tickets don't really mean anything as you don't have to pay regardless. The overall event looks good and there are some interesting looking talks, my only problem is that it is on a weekend and this is when I work so getting the time off may be difficult, but if I can, a free festival is worth going to even if you don't get anything out of it in the end.
EGX London (London)
The last festival that I wanted to look at is the one that I am probably most excited about as I know that I am going to try and make it. EGX London is the UK's biggest and best games festival, according to their website and promises to offer visitors opportunity to play the biggest console and PC games even before their released. They also have developer sessions that will bring attendees face-to-face with leading designers as they present their brand new games. There are also tournaments, indie games, cosplay, a retro zone, board games and so much.
The festival is from the 25th to the 28th of September 2014 and I definitely know that I am going on the first two days but I will not be attending the next two as it is the weekend, and happens to be my 21st birthday, so I am using this as a good opportunity but also as a reason to go on a mini birthday break. I am so excited about it and the more that I read about it, just makes me even more excited to go and experience it all.
